Market Timing in Australia

Saturday, May 27, 2023

Australia's Market

Australia’s All-Ords share index fell 1.8% last week after rising 0.2% the week before.

On my short-to-medium-term trend analysis, the All-Ords index is bearish. Its price momentum as measured by the MACD oscillator has been negative since the end of April.

On medium-to-long-term trend analysis, the All-Ords index is bullish. The rapid market rally in early April saved it from going bearish. The Coppock momentum indicator continued turning up in March and April after stalling in February.

America's Market

America’s S&P500 share index is bullish on short-to-medium-term trend analysis. Its MACD momentum indicator after going positive for four trading days is now negative again.

The S&P 500 index’s medium-to-long-term trend went bullish on 14 April 2023. The S&P 500 Coppock momentum indicator turned up at the end of March and continued rising in April suggesting that the bear market is over.

Sector Analysis

Within Australia, Resources Gold (PMGOLD.ax) has shot to the front followed by (QRE.ax). Both Finance (OZF.ax) and Property (SLF.ax) exhibit negative momentum.

Globally, all sectors remain positive with Other Developed Markets (IVE.ax) just ahead of Gold (PMGOLD.ax). Both the US Market (IVV.ax) and Emerging Markets (IEM.ax) show positive momentum. The latter was in the doldrums for a long time.

Market Timing in Australia

Saturday, April 1, 2023

Australia's Market

After falling seven weeks in a row, the All-Ords index finally staged a strong rally last week.
It was up 3.3% after slipping 0.7% the week before.

Compared with its all-time high on 4 January 2022, the Australian market is still down 7.0%. But that is better than the previous week when it was 10.0% below its peak, putting it in correction territory. A fall of less than 10% is a “pullback”, one of 10% to 20% is a “correction,” and one of over 20% is a “crash”.

The Australian All-Ords is still bearish on short-to-medium-term trend analysis but stayed bullish on medium-to-long-term analysis thanks to the strong rally in the All-Ords last week.

America's Market

The reverse applies in America, where on short-to-medium-term trend analysis, the S&P 500 index went bullish last week. Its MACD
momentum indicator, which was negative from 16 February 2023, has been positive for the past ten days, suggesting the fallout from the banking crisis is over. However,  the S&P 500 index remained bearish on medium-to-long-term analysis though its Coppock momentum indicator has turned up in the negative territory, suggesting the worst is over.

Sector Analysis

Within Australia, all sectors are now positive except Property (SLF.ax) which continues to slide. The leading sector is Resources (QRE.ax) followed by Gold (GOLD) and Finance (OZF.ax).

Globally, all sectors are now positive with Other Developed Markets (IVE.ax) still leading, followed by Gold (PMGOLD.ax), the US Market (IVV.ax), and now Emerging Markets (IEM.ax) which had been in the doldrums for a long time.

Market Timing in Australia

Saturday, March 11, 2023

Australia's Market

Over the past week, the All-Ords dropped by 1.8% after falling just 0.3% the week before. On Friday, the fall was 2.2%, sending a shiver through the ASX. Since its peak this year in early February, the All-Ords has fallen 5.5%.

On short-to-medium-term trend analysis, the All-Ords index is bearish. Its price momentum, as measured by the MACD oscillator, has been negative for the past four weeks and worsened so last Friday. On medium-to-long-term trend analysis, the All-Ords index is bullish.

America's Market

America’s S&P500 share index is bearish on short-to-medium-term trend analysis. Its MACD momentum indicator has been negative for the past four weeks and has gone more so in the last few days. The US share market’s medium-to-long-term trend went bullish on February 14th 2023. But on February 28th 2023, went bearish again and has become more so since. The S&P 500 Coppock momentum indicator is negative yet appears to have bottomed.

Fed funds futures traders are pricing in a 60% probability that the Fed will hike rates by 50 basis points at its March 21-22 meeting. Traders are now pricing for the rate to peak at 5.6% in September 2023. As a result, the US dollar strengthened, and all other currencies weakened, including the Australian dollar. The AUD has fallen from a peak of 0.72 USD in January to 0.66 USD now.
