Market Timing Australia

Saturday, January 18, 2020

Our Share Market Traffic Light is on Green this week.

(The Traffic Light is on Green when the Australian share market shows both positive short and long-term trends. It’s on Red when these trends are both negative. It’s on Amber when one of these trends is positive and the other is negative.)

Market Movements over the last week:

  • The Australian All Ords index rose 2.0% from 7041.9 to 7180.3
  • The American S&P 500 Index rose 1.4% from 3265.4 to 3330.0

Australia: The local market rose strongly again this week. The signing of the phase one US-China trade deal and better than expected Chinese economic data fuelled a surging market to new record highs on a daily basis with the banks, consumer staples, healthcare, mining and materials all pushing higher.

America: US markets also posted a solid rise this week. New housing starts were much stronger than expected and weekly jobless claims fell. The signing of a trade deal with China also helped reduce uncertainty. The CPI was a little lower than expected, however.

Leveraged Momentum

Monday, January 20, 2020

The market continues to fluctuate between fear of lower earnings, lower GDP, and the ongoing trade war and greed spurred by the possibility of the end of the trade war, strong consumer spending, and stronger than expected actual earnings and sales.
