Australia's Market

The December Santa rally ended abruptly on 2 January 2024 after the Boxing Day holiday. Thereafter the Australian All-Ords share index fell 3.7% to Tuesday 18 January but since then has rebounded by 2.8% to Thursday 25 January (before the Australia Day ASX closure).

On short-to-medium-term trend analysis, the All-Ords index is bullish. Its price momentum as measured by the MACD oscillator has been negative for the past fifteen trading days but has diminished as market confidence jumped last week.

On medium-to-long-term trend analysis, the All-Ords index is bullish. The All-Ords Coppock (COP) momentum indicator bottomed at the end of December 2022 and thereafter trended up into positive territory where it has wobbled, but still stayed modestly positive.

America's Market

America’s S&P500 share index continues to be bullish on short-to-medium-term trend analysis. Also, its MACD momentum indicator has gone positive in the last four trading days suggesting that Wall Street has regained its mojo.

The S&P 500 index’s medium-to-long-term trend went bullish on 14 April 2023. It became more bullish after its 10.3% correction in August to October 2023. The S&P 500 Coppock (COP) momentum indicator turned up at the end of March and thereafter has continued rising and is strongly positive which confirms that the previous US bear market is well and truly over.

Leveraged Momentum

Monday, January 22, 2024

The January 19 close of 4,839.81 for the S&P 500 was above the previous all-time high close of 4,796.56 hit on January 3, 2022, so the bear market has ended, recovery is complete, and we have entered the expansion phase of the current bull market which began on the date of the low close since January 3, 2022, which was 3,577.03 on October 12, 2022.

Uncertainty regarding the continued implications of supply chain issues, inflation trends, quantitative tightening (QT), rate increases, the inverted yield curve, geopolitical issues including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, the Red Sea crisis, and low earnings growth continues to cause volatility.

America's Market

America’s S&P500 share index continues to be very bullish on short-to-medium-term trend analysis. Its MACD momentum indicator went slightly negative on Friday suggesting that Wall Street may have run out of puff for now.

The S&P 500 index’s medium-to-long-term trend went bullish on 14 April 2023. It became more bullish after its 10.3% correction in August to October 2023. The S&P 500 Coppock (COP) momentum indicator turned up at the end of March and thereafter has continued rising and is strongly positive which confirms that the previous US bear market is over and there is not a new downturn in sight yet.

Sector Analysis

Within Australia, all sectors are now positive with Finance (OZF.ax) in front followed by Property (SLF.ax) and then Gold (GOLD.ax) and Resources (QRE) tied for third place. Since last month, the market has turned from a “risk off” to a “risk on” mood as longer-term bond yields continue to fall and the prospect of a cut in cash rates looms larger.

Globally, all sectors remain positive with the US Market (IVV.ax) still in front followed by Developed Markets outside the USA (IVE.ax) and Gold (GOLD.ax). Emerging Markets (IEM) is trailing last though remains slightly positive. All major global markets have been in a “risk on” mood for the past two months.
