Leveraged Momentum

Monday, January 27, 2020

The market is reacting in fear of the coronavirus's implications on future earnings. Our LevBands signal was in UPRO before the market opened today but its price fell to its trailing stop price so it was sold (CYA).

This strategy will buy UPRO when it falls below its lower band and then rises back to that lower band (buy low; signal has generated an annualized return of 18.29% since began tracking on TimerTrac on 4/27/16). LevCrosses remains in UPRO (an annualized return of 43.89% since began tracking on TimerTrac on 4/10/18). TQQQTrends remains in TQQQ (an annualized return of 108.07% since began tracking on TimerTrac on 11/24/18). UPROTrends also remains in UPRO (performance data will be referenced after one year of tracking on TimerTrac which began 3/25/19). LevIndex is invested 50% in UPRO and 50% in EURL (performance data will be referenced after one year of tracking on TimerTrac which began 9/16/19).

Performance data and charts for each of these strategies along with the index of your choice (for comparison) can be obtained on the Graphs page of the TimerTrac site.

Market Timing Australia

Saturday, January 25, 2020

Our Share Market Traffic Light is on Green this week.

(The Traffic Light is on Green when the Australian share market shows both positive short and long-term trends. It’s on Red when these trends are both negative. It’s on Amber when one of these trends is positive and the other is negative.)

Market Movements over the last week:

  • The Australian All Ords index rose 0.3% from 7180.3 to 7203.2
  • The American S&P 500 Index fell 1.0% from 3330.0 to 3295.5

Australia: The local market rose a little this week. After a bright start to the week, a surprise drop in the unemployment rate dampened expectations of a fall in official interest rates and sent the market tumbling on Thursday. The emerging threat of the Chinese coronavirus outbreak, which has now spread to a number of countries, put downward pressure on mining and resource stocks as uncertainty over the immediate prospects of an epidemic rattled markets.

America:  US markets fell heavily to close the week, with fears over the coronavirus outbreak paramount after several cases were detected in the US. Optimism that further talks with China on a "phase 2" trade deal might be imminent were overshadowed by the prospect of another trade war, this time with the EU.

Market Timing Australia

Saturday, January 18, 2020

Our Share Market Traffic Light is on Green this week.

(The Traffic Light is on Green when the Australian share market shows both positive short and long-term trends. It’s on Red when these trends are both negative. It’s on Amber when one of these trends is positive and the other is negative.)

Market Movements over the last week:

  • The Australian All Ords index rose 2.0% from 7041.9 to 7180.3
  • The American S&P 500 Index rose 1.4% from 3265.4 to 3330.0

Australia: The local market rose strongly again this week. The signing of the phase one US-China trade deal and better than expected Chinese economic data fuelled a surging market to new record highs on a daily basis with the banks, consumer staples, healthcare, mining and materials all pushing higher.

America: US markets also posted a solid rise this week. New housing starts were much stronger than expected and weekly jobless claims fell. The signing of a trade deal with China also helped reduce uncertainty. The CPI was a little lower than expected, however.

Leveraged Momentum

Monday, January 20, 2020

The market continues to fluctuate between fear of lower earnings, lower GDP, and the ongoing trade war and greed spurred by the possibility of the end of the trade war, strong consumer spending, and stronger than expected actual earnings and sales.

LevCrosses remains in UPRO (an annualized return of 42.11% since began tracking on TimerTrac on 4/10/18). TQQQTrends remains in TQQQ (an annualized return of 100.12% since began tracking on TimerTrac on 11/24/18). Market Timing Australia

Saturday, January 11, 2020

Our Share Market Traffic Light is on Green this week.

(The Traffic Light is on Green when the Australian share market shows both positive short and long-term trends. It’s on Red when these trends are both negative. It’s on Amber when one of these trends is positive and the other is negative.)

Market Movements over the last week:

  • The Australian All Ords index rose 2.7% from 6855.2 to 7041.9
  • The American S&P 500 Index rose 0.9% from 3234.9 to 3265.4

Australia: The local market surged this week, led by rises in the US and breaking the 7000 marks for the first time. Financial, technology and healthcare stocks led the way while the miners had a flat week despite strong demand for iron ore from China. Retail sales for November were surprisingly strong, although there is an expectation that December's figures will be disappointing.

America: US markets posted a rise this week amid slowing employment growth. Crude oil and gold prices spiked this week amid growing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The $US fell a little and speculation increased that interest rate cuts might be forthcoming later in the year as signs of a slowing economy become stronger.

Market Timing Australia

Saturday, January 4, 2020

Our Share Market Traffic Light is on Green this week.

(The Traffic Light is on Green when the Australian share market shows both positive short and long-term trends. It’s on Red when these trends are both negative. It’s on Amber when one of these trends is positive and the other is negative.)

Market Movements over the last week:

  • The Australian All Ords index fell 1.2% from 6936.3 to 6855.2
  • The American S&P 500 Index fell 0.2% from 3240.0 to 3234.9

Australia: The local market fell back this week. After some profit-taking pushed the market down early in the week it clawed back some ground, however, the US airstrike on Iran's military commander caused concern as crude oil prices rose sharply. The banks and miners both had a tough week however there were some rises elsewhere to soften the blow.

America: US markets lost a little ground this week as factory output fell to a post-GFC low, fuelled in part by the trade war with China. The impending phase 1 trade deal will likely limit the contraction however it could be several months before the impact is felt. Geopolitical tensions with Iran and a consequent spike in the price of crude oil could become a major factor in the coming weeks.
