Market Timing in Australia

Saturday, July 27, 2019

Australia: Boosted by strong rises overseas, local markets hit an all-time high this week, eclipsing the pre-GFC high of 6853.6 which was reached on November 1st 2007. As the housing market stabilizes thanks to low interest rates and iron ore continues to attract high prices, the local market has thrived. Comments this week by Reserve Bank Governor Philip Lowe that further interest rate cuts might be in the offing also lifted sentiment. All eyes will be on a number of corporate earnings reports over the next few weeks as expectations are that profits will be subdued.

America:  US markets posted a strong rise this week as economic growth slowed by a smaller margin than had been expected and consumer spending rose. Some concern over a fall in business investment soured the mood and comments by President Trump that China may delay any settlement in the tariff war until after the next presidential election also unsettled traders.

Market Timing in Australia

Saturday, July 20, 2019

Australia: Local markets had a flat week with trade war uncertainty continuing to depress sentiment. The oil price fell, driving a sharp fall in energy stocks. Resources and financials were relatively flat but small rises in other areas including healthcare, materials and consumer staples kept the market steady for the week.

America:  US markets fell back this week as a report that the next interest rate cut will be smaller than expected took traders by surprise. There were, however, some upbeat corporate results and with fresh optimism on Friday (US time) over talks to resolve the US-China trade war the falls could be short-lived. In economic news there were few surprises although retail sales beat expectations.

How will the expected Federal Reserve rate cuts effect the bond market? Bond markets can be difficult to predict for price movements and trends. Will a 1/4-point basis cut lead to a rally or will it require a full ½ percent cut to significantly move the markets higher? What if the Fed decides to wait and keep rates unchanged surprising the markets, will a large sell off follow? Predictive models cannot account for unknown news events, geopolitical risks or decisions like the Feds but can accurately model long-term trends. A short-term market move of a knee jerk reaction to news can account for a large move in the markets but the long-term trend will likely remain. Knowing when and how to time the markets is key to investing success. Glance Financial Advisors LLC. has developed a proprietary computerized quantitative Bond market timing strategy that has been shown to be highly effective.

The GLANCE Bond plus Energy portfolio {ENERGY(1X)+BONDS(2X) 2.8-YR AR 56% MDD 15%} has 5 times the return of the S&P500 with better downside risk metrics over the past 2.8 years.

Gold has been highly sought after and valued throughout the ages as a precious metal. Gold was the primary currency for trade for most of history.

The 2011 bubble in gold was followed by a 3-year bear market and then 4 years of sideways price movement, and now the recent1-month rally. It has been difficult to quantitatively model the gold market. Glance financial advisors have developed a gold strategy that is tracked on timertrac.com.The strategy is based on a proprietary computer model that generates buy/sell signals and has proven highly accurate.

The GLANCE_GLD strategy trades at 2X leverage utilizing GLD for buy long positions and T-bills on sell signals. Performance is an annual return of +10.32% over its past 4 years on its TimerTrac trading record.

The strategy has been historically backtested using the frozen computer code employed by Glance financial advisors LLC and has shown similar performance over a 28-year period as shown in the chart below. The red line shows daily growth of the GLANCE_GLD 1Xleverage strategy and the blue line is the price of gold (divided by 10 for scaling of Gold vs GLD)

Market Timing in Australia

Saturday, July 13, 2019

Australia: Local markets fell heavily on Monday after positive US economic data created uncertainty about the likelihood of interest rate cuts, making up some ground over the remainder of the week but never recovering. Consumer Staples and Consumer Discretionary stocks generally performed well but most other sectors were down.

America:  Strong non-farm payroll figures and a higher than expected CPI raised concerns about the future of interest rate cuts. However, these fears were largely calmed by Jerome Powell's testimony before congress in which he reinforced the market's expectations of an interest rate cut this month.

Although some near term negative market factors have emerged this week (options volume and investor sentiment), the stock market's major and minor trends remain positive, along with key market internals that we follow.

If the market was to stall on the upside this week, the first places we would likely see some emerging weakness would be a rise above 15.13 in the VIX and a decline back below 81.33 on the NASDAQ Composite Index. Otherwise our near to intermediate term US market outlook remains positive.

Market Timing in Australia

Saturday, July 6, 2019

Australia: Local markets reacted strongly to the latest cut in official interest rates and positive leads from overseas, driving the All Ords to within a whisker of its pre-GFC highs. The interest rate cuts particularly boosted the real estate sector, with SLF up over 6.5%. Positive news on trade from the G20 meeting and rising iron ore prices also helped the sentiment.

America:  A softening in US-China trade relations after the G20 meeting lifted spirits. The US has agreed to put additional tariffs on hold and ease some restrictions on Huawei, China has agreed to some new purchases of US agricultural products, and some other agreements have been reached as the parties will now restart negotiations.

Market Timing in Australia

Saturday, June 29,2019

Australia: Local markets took a breather this week, but still managed to post a solid 3% gain for the month. With a number of geopolitical and economic worries in play at the moment, all eyes are on the G20 meeting in Japan with hopes that progress can be made in the US-China trade war. Iron ore price rises slowed this week, but tensions in the Middle East saw a small rise in the price of crude oil. America: The

US market also fell back a little this week as traders await the outcome of trade talks with China. There have been mixed signals from both sides, but there is hope that progress can be made before further tariffs are introduced.
In economic news, new home sales fell and weekly jobless claims were up.
